Backus Hospital Named High Performing for Maternity Care by U.S. News and World Report

December 27, 2022

U.S. News and World Report recently recognized Backus Hospital a High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care 2022-2023.

The award was created to assist expectant parents and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care.

“I am incredibly proud of all the physicians, nurses and staff at Backus Hospital for their ongoing commitment to bringing exceptional maternity care to the communities we serve,” said Backus Hospital President Donna Handley. “Our goal is to provide new mothers with the highest quality, safest and most compassionate care possible so that they can focus on what matters most, welcoming their newborn babies into the world.”

U.S. News evaluated nearly 650 hospitals that provide labor and delivery services and submitted detailed data to the publication for analysis. Fewer than 300 hospitals received a High Performing designation, which is the highest award a hospital can earn in maternity care.

“When expectant parents are considering their options for welcoming a baby into the world, the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care is designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in delivering babies for uncomplicated pregnancies,” said Min Hee Seo, senior health data scientist at U.S. News.

U.S. News evaluates how well hospitals perform in childbirth using C-section rates, newborn complication rates, breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates, routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC) rates, episiotomy rates and whether a hospital meets new federal criteria for “birthing-friendly” practices. U.S. News also evaluates how hospitals track and report their outcomes for patients of different races and ethnicities as a way to identify racial disparities in maternity care and achieve health equity.
