Ayer Neuroscience Institute Adds Pain Management Specialist in Norwich, Mystic

The Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute announces the addition of interventional pain management specialist Dr. Juan Ruiz to its team, seeing patients in Ayer’s Norwich and Mystic offices.

Dr. Ruiz comes to Hartford HealthCare from Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in Washington, where he worked as a multidisciplinary and interventional pain medicine specialist. He also has experience in leadership as the specialty medical director, overseeing subspecialty medical practices, creating system-wide policies, strategic planning, spearheading quality metric programs and community outreach.

His areas of clinical interest include neuromodulation, both spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation; ultrasound-guided pain procedures; radiofrequency ablation; verterbrogenic pain; and minimally-invasive treatment of spinal stenosis.

Dr. Ruiz, who is fluent in Spanish, is a graduate of the Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala. He completed an internship at the University of Maryland Midtown Medical Center and residency in anesthesiology at Temple University Hospital. He also completed a pain medicine and interventional spine fellowship at the University of Washington.

Board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine, Dr. Ruiz co-authored several professional articles on spinal anesthesia use to treat cardiac patients, and a review of the Atlas of Image-Guided Intervention in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. He has presented on pain medicine for primary care physicians, marijuana and chronic pain, and anesthetic effects of sleep apnea in children.

Dr. Ruiz is a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain, Spine Intervention Society, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
