Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Offers 3D Mammography Exams at Torrington and Winsted locations

For women seeking a convenient location for their annual mammography screening, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital radiology services offers Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams at two convenient locations – 220 Kennedy Drive in Torrington and Hungerford Emergency & Medical Care at 115 Spencer Street in Winsted.
Digital 3D mammography from CHH utilizes advanced breast tomosynthesis technology that is clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers and decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing. These screenings are best suited for pre-menopausal women and those with dense breasts.

A 3D exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect. During the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A 3D exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than the previous conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.
According to Hologic, Inc., a worldwide leader in Women’s Health and developer of 3D Mammography, researchers have found that a 3D exam finds 20-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone, an average increase of 41%. The exam is also seen to reduce call backs by up to 40% compared to 2D alone.
